Best Shimano Spinning Reel Review
The Stradic FK is the Yin to the Shimano’s Yang. Boasting superior strength and drag this reel is capable of reeling in anything from a minnow to a stingray.
Here is a quick summary of Shimano Stradic FK’s specifications:
- 6 S A-RB ball bearings & 1 A-RB bearing
- Aluminum Hagane gear drive
- 6:1 gear ratio
- 31-inch line speed
- Weighs 6.9 lbs.
- Mono Line Capacity: 2/270, 4/140, 6/110
- PowerPro Line Capacity: 10/95, 15/85, 20/65
The product comes packaged in a protective Styrofoam casing. An owner’s manual is also included.
The reel itself comes equipped with Hagane body & gear drive, Super Stopper II, X-Ship, S A-RB bearings, CF aluminum cold forged spool, Fluid drive II, Power Roller II and a Propulsion Line system.
Made with high-quality aluminum and stainless steel this reel will last long enough for you to get your monies worth.
Shimano uses the Dyna-Balance to add to the smooth feel of the reel. This cuts down on rotor wobble that really makes a difference in the reel.
It also uses the same Power Roller II the Ci4 uses to help reduce the twisting in your line. It makes all the difference in the world for reducing wasted casts. You will not throw your line directly into the water anymore!
The gear ratio here is at an even 6:1. The anti-reverse technology is great. When you are getting nibbled, you will not need to pull your line to set the hook. There is no more give to your line as the hook will set itself when your bait is hit.
I find myself using the FK even when I should not be because I love the way it casts. Out of all the reels in my arsenal, this one has the longest cast. It has to do with the way it releases the line.
I like the T-handle for this design. The handle has a smooth feel to it as well. It feels very similar to the Berkley Series One in that respect.
As far as spinning reels go you cannot get much better on power. As I covered before you have to use this reel to get a feel for the power. I have caught Flounder and King Salmon on this thing, and it is designed for spinning!
It has up to 20lbs of drag. It gets its smooth power from the use of felted steel washers. The felting gives the drag a really smooth feel without sacrificing power. If you hit something big you will definitely feel the benefits.
Ease of Use
Designed with 6 ball bearings the reel-in on the FK is as smooth as it gets. I have not used too many other reels that feel as smooth as this one. That is what I have come to expect from Shimano, and they deliver.
The FK uses an X-Ship gear system. The X-Ship uses 2 pinions, one on each side of the bearings to better distribute the weight as you reel. These get rid of any friction between the rod and reel. It is kind of like your reel having power steering.
It is one thing to test this out in the store, but you can really feel it with a fish on the line. I have noticed a reduction in stress on my forearms when I am fighting.
The FK has a sleek metallic design. I think it fits the reel’s reputation for strength. You will not believe how light it is when you pick it up. In my experience, Shimano always has our comfort in mind while designing their reels.
Build Quality & Durability
Shimano only uses the best materials in their products. The gears are forged and not cut in the manufacturing process. This leaves less room for imperfections in the metal that can lead to durability problems. Not to mention it adds to the strength of the reel.
I have had mine for a few months but what I read while doing my research is that FK is supposed to last for around 10 years. If you break the cost down per years of useful life, you are getting great bang for your buck.
Shimano carries a 1-year warranty on the FK. The warranty pretty much covers only defective parts.
The warranty does not cover lack of maintenance, normal wear, and tear, damage caused while using other brands products in conjunction with the FK, saltwater corrosion and other such standard disclaimers.
Make sure that the serial number remains visible because Shimano will not provide warranty cover it if they cannot see it.
Overall, Shimano Stradic FK is a great reel. Shimano did it again and changed the game. The price tag may be a little intimidating. But remember with the useful life of this reel you are going to burn through many cheap reels before the FK dies on you.
I cannot say enough good things here and you will have a tough time finding any negative reviews about its performance. Check it out now for yourself!
